VITEK® MS MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometer represents a revolutionary change for microbiology practice. This system offer ease-of-use, very little technical time, no pre-extraction and preparation steps and generates rapid results of extremely high accuracy. As one of the primary investigators of the validation studies that led to the FDA clearance of VITEK MS, Dr. Ginocchio will review in the clinical trial performance data, and present case studies illustrating the value of rapid diagnosis using mass spectrometry. The VITEK MS MALDI-TOF platform provides rapid microbial identification of 1-2 minutes, which will dramatically enhance the value of the lab and patient care when compared to standard TATs:

  • Bacteria: average 24 hr
  • Yeasts: average 48-72 hr; molds: days to weeks
  • AFB: average 1 day (probe) to 4 weeks (biochems)

When combined with rapid AST, VITEK MS generates results in one day. Earlier diagnosis will improve clinical outcomes, reduce morbidity and mortality, lead to better antibiotic selection and stewardship, and allow for more rapid initiation of appropriate infection control measures.
